The following text samples are in typeset format. In these phonemic examples, "long" vowel and voiced /th/ digraph characters are replaced with vowel-macrons and the /ng/ phoneme is printed as "eng." The sample text was scanned from printed copy of text typed with a special AKSES keyboard template in MSWord. Children will most likely be taught to read and print this format. Learners print macron (line over the letter) as easily as they now write a dot over "i" and "j" and cross "t". The "new letter" they learn is "eng" which resembles "n" with descender like "j."

What's the Point?
The point this page illustrates is that most second and third graders in the AKSES program would be able to "read" the above text without prompting, although some might have trouble placing proper stress in complex words. Some of the words are not in their vocabularies and subjects might not be appropriate, but these selections illustrate that phonemic writing removes the reading roadblock of spelling. Children are able to read (say) all words in their vocabularies rather than being limited to the tiny fraction with spellings they recognize. It permits primary teachers to focus on reading comprehension using the total vocabularies their students command. Learning by reading becomes a reality for primary students because the range of suitable reading materials includes vocabulary teachers now can use only in oral instruction.
